Game Boy Sewing Machine

Game Boy Sewing Machine

I grew up playing the original Game Boy as well as a Game Boy color and I loved them dearly. I've always had a fascination with unique and weird accessories, especially when they work with my favorite consoles.

Back when the Game Boy color was new, computers were finding their way into all kinds of electronics, but we weren't fully in the "smart" era we are in today. Singer took advantage of this nascent computerization and decided to work with Nintendo to make a computer controlled sewing machine that used the Game Boy color as the brains!

It shipped with a Singer Sewing "game" cartridge, and the sewing machine had a link-cable coming out the back. Users could program the switch width and spacing, choose different stich patterns, or even program text for the machine to write out.

While I knew nothing about sewing, I always thought this was a really cool and exotic accessory for the Game Boy.

One streamer I watch was doing some sewing streams and I decided to check eBay if any of these were available for a reasonable price. I found one, and it's only flaw was a missing lid for it's base. The price was right, so it was on its way.

I got a big ol' box and unpacked the machine:

As I mentioned, it was missing one of it's lids to store accessories in the base. I leveraged my 3D modeling & printing skills to make a suitable replacement. I then color matched the beige plastic & gave it a nice airbrush coating. Perfect! Note that the left edge did not have a rounded edge like the right side - I used lots of reference photos to make sure I got the profile spot on.

Since I knew nothing about sewing, I found some tutorials on YouTube, and ended up getting a kit from Glory Allan.

The first step was to practice. I found a local fabric store that gave me some scrap material to work with, and I practiced the most challenging part - making a pocket. I wanted to make sure I would nail it on the actual bag. My first try came out very well and boosted my confidence with the machine.

With that done, I waited for the kit to arrive in the mail & then completed the whole back. It came out great! I later bought another kit from Glory Alaln which I plan on doing soon.
